PROJECT LIMASSOL/PAPHOS

Municipal Solid Waste Reduction Programme for coastal hotels and related waste generating sites in Limassol and Paphos Districts

The Project is addressed to local authorities that have mass waste generating sites on their coastal frontage in Limassol and Paphos Districts and is implemented in the following areas:

  • Limassol Municipality
  • Yermasoyia Municipality (Amathounta Municipality*)
  • Pafos Municipality
  • Geroskipou Municipality (Hierocepia Municipality*)
  • Polis Chrysochous Municipality
  • Pegeia Municipality (Akamas Municipality*)
  • Ayios Tychonas Community (Amathounta Municipality*)
  • Pyrgos Community (Limassol)
  • Parekklisia Community
  • Mouttagiaka Community (Amathounta Municipality*)
  • Neo Chorio Community (Polis Chrysochous Municipality*)

Objective

The overall objective of the Project is to promote separate collection systems in large producers for:

  • paper and paper packaging,
  • metal and plastic packaging,
  • organic waste.

The Project is implemented in cooperation with the local authorities, while ensuring the compliance of the Republic of Cyprus with the EU and National legislation on municipal solid waste management.

Equipment

The Department of Environment proceeds with the supply and installation of equipment to the beneficiaries for the rational management of municipal solid waste generated by coastal hotels and related mass waste generating sites such as restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, organisations and institutions.

The equipment includes:

  • Compressors and small presses for compacting paper packaging
  • Submersible bins for PMD, glass and paper waste
  • Skip bins for pruning
  • Pruning shredders
  • Bins for organic waste
  • Refuse collection vehicles for the collection and transport of organic waste
  • Vehicles of various types for the collection and transport of separately collected waste

Total Project Budget: 10.500.000 €

The project is implemented under the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021-2027” with EU co-financing.

Expected benefits from the implementation of the Project

  • Contribution to the achievement of the objectives of Directive 2018/851/EC on the waste management hierarchy (reduction, reuse, recycling, recovery, landfill).
  • Contribute to the achievement of national targets for recycling and composting for the years 2025, 2030 and 2035.
  • Strengthening source separation and separate collection of waste, in synergy with the ‘Pay as you Throw’ scheme, promoting sustainable waste management and waste reduction.
  • Contributing in achieving high quality recycling and diverting organic and recyclable waste from landfill.
  • Protecting the environment by reducing uncontrolled waste disposal, diverting waste from landfill, and promoting the recovery and recycling of materials.
  • Improving the image of tourist areas in terms of waste management.
  • To contribute in improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of the areas concerned.
  • Contributing to the development of environmental awareness.
  • Reduction of mixed waste quantities ending up in landfills.
