The scheme is implemented on a nationwide basis and the participation of all Local Authorities is mandatory.

HOUSEHOLDS

Single-family houses & apartment buildings

Residuals: Each household is charged according to the volume of waste generated through the purchase of a special prepaid 10L or 35L or 56L bag + a fixed fee.

Kitchen waste (organic): Each household will have an internal 10L internal bin and an additional 40L external bin for collection by the Municipality or Community Services.

WHAT WE PUT IN THE PREPAID BAG

ONLY SUBLIC WASTE – That which is not diverted to another of the other streams, that which is not recycled and that which is not reused.

Example:

  • Toilet paper
  • Children’s diapers
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Toothpaste
  • Cellophane
  • Foil
  • Water glasses – coffee cups
  • Disposable plates
  • Snack bags – frozen
  • Styrofoam
  • Straws
  • Toothbrushes
  • Cloth Hangers
  • Horn-Rimmed objects
  • Plastic pots
  • Buckets
  • Mop/broom stocks
  • Watering hoses
  • Pipes
  • Notebooks spiral
  • Pens etc.

Separating food scraps and recyclables from the prepaid bag significantly reduces the volume of waste and therefore the cost of purchasing prepaid bags.

The scheme is implemented on a nationwide basis and participation is mandatory.

BUSINESSES

Kitchen waste (organic): in the case of large and special producers, there will be an internal 40L bin and an additional external 120L or 240L or 360L bin for collection by the Municipality or Community services.

The cost of the prepaid bin for residuals is set by the Local Authorities.

The scheme is implemented on a nationwide basis and participation is mandatory for all.

WHAT WE PUT IN THE PREPAID BIN

ONLY SUBLIC WASTE – Any waste that is not diverted to another of the other streams, that is not recycled and that is not reused.

To successfully establish a scheme of source separation and separate collection of recyclable and organic waste (kitchen and garden waste), businesses/large producers will also be able to have at their disposal: A 40L bin which will be inside the business for sorting kitchen waste and depending on the capacity of each business, there will be a 120L or 240L or 360L bin outside and near the business.

Compressors/Presses for separate sorting of paper and PMD will also be provided through other Environment Department Programs
